Business Health & Wellbeing - Embrace YOUR Staff's strengths

Connect and Grow Magazine: Edition 13 September - October 2024

Do you, as a business owner, encourage your staff to be themselves as much as possible and respectful of others in the workplace?

Do you encourage each person to shine brightly in their strengths and support them in what they are not as good at?

There will always be some people who shine brightly at specific tasks and activities in a workplace and others who don't; however, when you consider the entire team, especially during recruitment, you can build a team with various strengths to cover every different scenario. Knowing your staff's strengths and challenges will give you insight into if the staff can work as an entire team,

Some businesses have shared with me that when they have staff who have neurodivergent traits, they have had to put them on a different team from those who are neurotypical, but they still have issues. The staff are two separate teams, which can work in some workplaces; overall, it is not creating a fully inclusive workplace.

Does your business/workplace make allowances for the different traits?

This is an important question to consider as not all staff members who have neurodivergent traits may see themself as neurodivergent; if you then place them in a team where there are people who consider themselves as neurodivergent, they could feel like you are stereotyping them, and this can be an issue regarding human resources. A different way of approaching it can be looking at the person's traits in relation to the work requirements that are suitable for the workplace and how they can be used for the best outcome for all.

It is also advisable to seek human resources input regarding staff performance and management.

Staff wellbeing

As shared in other Connect & Grow Magazine issues, your staff's health and well-being are integral to your business's long-term success.

Do you ask your staff to complete all staff surveys? Do you have flexibility in the workplace?

The flexibility of working in the office and from home.

Asking your staff to complete workplace surveys can give you insights into how the staff feel about certain aspects of the business that you would like to focus on and improve as required. You can have the survey anonymous to help encourage staff to complete it.

Having some time at lunch that people can choose to go for a walk or having things like a gym on site where appropriate for your business.

Some workplaces check with their staff on what type of well-being activities would suit them and, where possible, make them available, such as meditation and yoga. They also have fruit and nutritional food choices in the office space.

These types of well-being activities and options in the workplace can assist in minimising the workplace. You can also encourage your staff to bring their appropriate strengths to the workplace and be themselves as much as possible and appropriate, keeping in mind that professional boundaries and behaviours exist.

If you work for yourself, what are you doing that is taking care of you? Do you ensure that you choose nutritional foods and move your body as much as possible?

Do you have time focused on switching off from work calls and emails, where you can go for a walk or catch up with a friend, where you laugh and focus on other aspects of life? These are important parts of your business and its well-being.

Workplace well-being is essential and unique to every business. Staff happiness and feeling included are massive parts of long-term business success and growth.

Your business health and well-being are multi-layered. No two businesses are the same, so staff well-being will be different in some ways. Building the right team with the right attitude and approach takes time!
