Business to Business - Your People are YOUR best Investment!

Connect and Grow Magazine: Edition 12 August - September 2024

When it comes to a successful business, your people, both staff and clients, are worth investing in; after all, without either of them, there is NO business, right?

A couple of months ago we talked about the business foundations and getting that right.

This month, August – September, we are focused on you being aware of the connections your team has and that you have with your clients and staff.

Whether you are a sole trader or a company, connection and positive communication are the keys to long-term business success! Success depends on knowing your audience and clients and attracting them to your business.

Identifying what success means to you now and in the future is essential. Around the world, businesses are struggling right now, and many have shifted their definition of success to earning money and “getting clients.”  This can be a block to the business's long-term success as they are both something that will constantly change. Sometimes, there will be a lot of business; other times, there will be less. It is normal, and this is why planning for quiet times helps with the long-term vision and staying positive and focused on what is working and why you choose to be a business owner in the first place.

So, what does success mean to you? Take a few minutes to stop and have a clear definition of that.

Once you clearly define what success means and what it looks like for you and your business, you can stop and assess how your staff, where appropriate, is taking action that leads to that success. How do they communicate with each other and potential and existing clients? How do they approach their work? Are they showing up with a positive attitude or taking time off sick on a regular basis? Are they seeing problems more often than they see solutions?

There will be times when it is important to invest in your staff so the business can grow and be the success you choose it to be. This can also mean making changes.

Some things to consider:

·         Do you offer staff education sessions

·         Is your workplace inclusive, and would the staff benefit from understanding neurodiversity more?

·         Do you have a regular weekly check-in with the team? How does that go when you have it?

·         Do you have an employee wellbeing program? If yes, is it being implemented so that your staff benefit from it, or is it there but forgotten about?

·         Do you share the wins with the team?

·         How do you celebrate the wins in the business and the staff?

Even if you have yourself and maybe one other person or if it is just you, some of those things still apply, especially wellbeing, understanding diversity with clients, and celebrating the wins.

If you are a sole trader, having a wellbeing program is essential for your business success. If you are not taking care of yourself, then you will have nothing left to give to others. There is a saying that speaks to knowing the difference between working on your business and in your business; each requires different things from you.

If you spend more time in one, then everything becomes unbalanced.

Your business deserves the best from you and your team, and it can then provide you with the returns you aim for.

Let’s talk communication:

How effective is communication in your business? How do you and your team communicate, and how do you communicate with your clients?

The tone you use when speaking with someone in your marketing and emails is vital to building positive relationships. People respond to subconscious messages as much as they respond to conscious communication, and they will make a decision based on feeling as well as logic; sometimes, it is more of an emotional decision.
